Thailand has proposed to the 20th ASEAN Senior Labour Officials Meeting in Singapore to accelerate the roadmap to eliminate the worst forms of child labour by 2025, stressing the need for stronger action and measures.
Mr. Boonsong Thapchaiyudh, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labor, co-chaired the meeting of the ASEAN Permanent Secretaries of Labor (SLOM) at the 20th ASEAN Senior Labour Officials Meeting in the Republic of Singapore. Mr. Boonsong said that the Ministry of Labor, represented by Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Minister of Labor, has assigned the Thai delegation to attend the ASEAN Senior Labour Officials Meeting. He stated at the meeting on the ASEAN Work Plan to Eliminate the Worst Forms of Child Labour by 2025 to representatives of ASEAN member states and participants that on behalf of Thailand, he would report on the latest progress of the draft ASEAN Declaration on the Protection of Child Labour, including the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour, which was already endorsed
at the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
This Declaration reaffirms the shared commitment to protect child labour and eliminate the worst forms of child labour across the ASEAN region, and emphasizes the need for stronger actions and measures to address the root causes of child labour, namely poverty, inequality and lack of education, and to promote cooperation among governments, the private sector, civil society and international partners to create a protective environment for children.
The 20th ASEAN Senior Labour Officials’ Meeting (SLOM) aimed to follow up on the progress of the discussions of other ASEAN meetings related to SLOM, as well as the implementation of integrated cross-sectoral cooperation frameworks, such as the development of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Strategy after 2025. Among the key agenda items, the Meeting discussed the ASEAN Work Plan to Eliminate the Worst Forms of Child Labour by 2025, the status
of projects and activities for the implementation and monitoring of the implementation of the ASEAN Guidelines on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Labour, the report of the ASEAN Occupational Health and Safety Network, preparations for the 28th ASEAN Labour Ministers’ Meeting (ALMM), as well as preparations for the 22nd ASEAN Plus Three Senior Officials’ Meeting (SLOM+3) and the 13th ASEAN Plus Three Labour Ministers’ Meeting (ALMM+3).
