Narathiwat: The situation in the southern border provinces remains unsettled. Today in Narathiwat, an assailant shot and seriously injured a volunteer ranger in broad daylight. Meanwhile, the National Security Council (NSC) is discussing the formation of a special government representative to urgently address the southern border issues within four months.
According to Thai News Agency, this audacious incident occurred at 12:30 PM. Three assailants shot and killed 37-year-old volunteer ranger Nasuree Waesamae, assigned to the 46th Ranger Regiment, on a road in Bong-o Village, Ra-ngae District, on the border of Chanae District. Three bullets struck his right ribs, leaving him in critical condition. Preliminary investigations revealed that before the incident, Mr. Nasuree was standing in front of his house with his wife when the three assailants sneaked up behind him and fired several shots at him before fleeing through the forest behind him. Security forces have now taken control of the area and are urgently investigating and tracking down the perpetrators.
The National Security Council (NSC) discussed the establishment of a special government representative to address the southern border issues. Mr. Chatchai Bangchuad, Secretary-General of the National Security Council, who attended the council meeting today, revealed that the meeting considered establishing a special government representative as a mechanism to align policy and operational efforts on the ground. Given the government's limited timeframe of four months, or no more than a year, this mechanism is crucial for setting clear work goals and solving problems within a limited timeframe. General Somsak Rungsita has been appointed head of the peace talks and is preparing to finalize the list of government representatives. The National Security Council (NSC) will review the composition of the representatives before selecting them by the NSC and the political sector. The size of the representatives will not be large and the number of members has not yet been determined, but the process will be expedited.
