Trang:Aunt Saiyut's farm in Nayong District, Trang Province, has introduced a new cash crop an exotic fruit called "Supa Supa," imported from Peru. Aunt Saiyut, or Mrs. Saiyut Chansawang, a former civil servant at the Trang Provincial Agricultural Office, explained that her farm has served as a learning center for the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of King Rama IX for over 20 years. Initially, after retirement, she used her free time to cultivate organic farmland and experimented with planting Supa Supa seeds, a fruit native to the Amazon basin. After five years, the Supa Supa trees, which typically only bear fruit once a year during September-October, have produced fruit for the first time this year.
According to Thai News Agency, "Supa Supa" resembles a sapodilla in appearance, weighing 2 fruits per kilogram. The flesh inside is orange-yellow with small, shriveled seeds (only 1-2 seeds). The taste is mildly sweet and fragrant, uniquely reminiscent of a cross between cantaloupe and sapodilla. The large, wide leaves can be used in various dry dishes such as salads, stir-fries, fried foods, fried fish, wrapping rice, and as a garnish.
Aunt Saiyut emphasized that if any farmers are interested in a new, trending cash crop that is easy to care for, sells at a good price, and currently has no competitors, her farm has seedlings for sale at 100-150 baht each, over 2 feet tall. Farmers can also sample "Supa Supa" at Aunt Saiyut's farm every day.
