Bangkok: Authorities are poised to expand investigations into the "secret drug pub" operation in Huai Khwang, possibly linking it to tribal networks smuggling narcotics in the Golden Triangle.
According to Thai News Agency, following a raid on a game shop illegally operating as an entertainment venue in the Huai Khwang area, nine patrons tested positive for drugs. Mr. Prinn Mekhanan, Director of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board in Bangkok, revealed that the arrested shop operator hails from Mae Chan, Chiang Rai province, and owns land in Mae Sai. This suggests potential ties to a northern ethnic group and a broader network of acquaintances. Authorities are currently working to expand the investigation and seize assets belonging to the criminal network.
Most of the drugs in question originate from the Golden Triangle, with smuggling into the country occurring via northern and northeastern routes. Once inside, the narcotics are typically stored in the Bangkok metropolitan area before distribution. The shop owner has provided a partial confession, claiming the drugs were purchased for a party with friends, but further investigation is required to determine the exact network involved.
Police view the distribution of drugs to others as a form of trafficking. While this network may not be a nationwide entity, it represents a significant distribution point in the area, contributing to the drug use problem in Bangkok's numerous entertainment venues. Authorities are working to trace connections to higher-level accomplices, with investigations ongoing to determine if there is any Chinese financial involvement.
Initially, charges against the owner include possession of Category 1 and 2 narcotics with intent to sell, possession of e-cigarettes, operating a business without a license, and operating beyond permitted hours.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Teeradet Thamsuthee, Deputy Commissioner of the Bangkok Metropolitan Police, stated that officers are examining mobile phone data to trace drug trafficking routes and identify the network's source and level. A comprehensive investigation is also underway to determine if district officials or local police neglected their duties, potentially allowing the illegal drug sales. Any misconduct will be further investigated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Division 1.
