Ayutthaya Authorities Crack Down on Overpriced Urea Fertilizer Sales

Ayutthaya: Authorities in Ayutthaya have launched a crackdown on overpriced urea fertilizer sales, initiating an investigation into production costs and tracing the source of the problem.

According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Internal Trade, in collaboration with the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD), conducted a sting operation following complaints about fertilizer sales in Bang Bal District, Ayutthaya Province. They discovered urea fertilizer (46-0-0 formula) being sold for 1,190 baht per sack, an unusually high price. An investigation into the cost structure and the entire supply chain is underway, with legal action being taken against anyone found to be exploiting the situation.

Mr. Witiyakorn Maneenet, Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, stated that upon receiving complaints from farmers, the department immediately deployed a special task force to the area. They collaborated with police officers from the CPPD to conduct a sting operation, collecting evidence and inspecting relevant sales documents. Officials are currently reviewing past documents, including tax invoices and proof of delivery, to analyze the pricing structure. If it is found that costs have not increased but prices are unreasonably high, it will be considered opportunistic trade, leading to legal action under Section 29 of the Price Control and Service Act B.E. 2542 (1999).

The investigation has been expanded to cover the entire distribution chain, from wholesalers to all involved parties, to trace the price sources and prevent unfair pricing. Any instances of consumer exploitation will result in strict action against those involved. The Director-General emphasized that the department will not tolerate opportunistic price gouging of agricultural inputs, particularly during the planting season when farmers require large quantities of fertilizer. The department is committed to closely monitoring price situations and enforcing the law to ensure fair trade practices.

The public is encouraged to report price gouging by calling the hotline 1569, using the Mr.DIT application's "Complaint" menu, or contacting them via Line @Mr.DIT, enabling officials to investigate promptly.
