Bangkok: The Department of Highways has announced the opening of the Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi Motorway for free travel during weekends, aiming to boost the economy and tourism. The move is expected to provide easier and quicker access compared to previous routes, with the motorway anticipated to be fully operational by October.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Apirat Chaiwongnoi, Director-General of the Department of Highways, stated that the department is fast-tracking the development of the intercity expressway network, focusing on the Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi Intercity Expressway No. 81. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance convenience, speed, and safety for travelers and goods transport from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi Province and beyond. The project aims to promote trade, investment, and tourism while increasing Thailand's global competitiveness under the 'Transportation for Thailand's Opportunity' policy.
The Department of Highways is temporarily opening portions of the Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi route, spanning 96 kilometers, every weekend at three checkpoints: Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Pathom West, and Bang Yai. The route will be toll-free every Friday from 3:00 p.m. to Monday at 9:00 a.m., starting from May 2, 2025. The motorway is accessible only to small 4-wheel vehicles with a speed limit of 80 km/h, reducing travel time to approximately two hours and easing congestion on main highways by 20-30%. Full operation is expected by October 2025, with toll collection planned to commence in early 2026 after the New Year.
The weekend opening of Motorway No. 81 is set to facilitate and expedite travel for residents of Kanchanaburi and neighboring provinces, enhancing holiday convenience and promoting regional tourism, thereby positively impacting the national economy. The initiative is also expected to alleviate traffic issues on major roads and contribute to energy conservation, pollution reduction, and route promotion ahead of the motorway's full opening in 2025. Preparations for rest area construction are underway, with further updates on bidding processes to follow.
In a separate matter, the Highways Department has addressed the tragic incident involving Mr. Amnat, who died due to a falling cement block under the Rama 2 overpass. The department has reached out to Mr. Amnat's family since the accident and assured full compensation in accordance with the Ministry of Transport's regulations.
