Bhumtham Asserts Pheu Thai’s Strong Support in Chiang Rai By-Election


Bangkok: Bhumtham highlighted that the Chiang Rai by-election results demonstrate Pheu Thai’s sustained strong support base. He emphasized the need to revive and strengthen the party, urging the public to observe the changes. He refuted claims that Thaksin’s imprisonment was intended to generate sympathy for Pheu Thai, stressing Thaksin’s fight for innocence and the resolution of the issue, while maintaining the party’s unwavering faith.



According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Acting Prime Minister, addressed the Pheu Thai Party’s victory in the Chiang Rai District 7 by-election. He asserted that the election confirmed the party’s solid support base, which remains unaffected. He expressed the opportunity to review actions and improve the party, dismissing rumors of members leaving as mere speculation. He acknowledged past management issues among party MPs and emphasized collaborative efforts to resolve them, noting previous coordination challenges within the party’s executive branches.



When questioned about Pheu Thai’s election victory amidst lower poll predictions compared to Bhumjaithai Party, Bhumtham stated the results showed Pheu Thai’s significant lead over the Prachachon Party. He criticized pre-election polling as inappropriate, asserting that Pheu Thai’s support remains unchanged. He emphasized the party’s need to pursue its goals and direction, which its members still believe in.



Bhumtham highlighted the importance of improving the party to regain public confidence and address issues. He acknowledged past criticisms regarding policy implementation but emphasized efforts to push forward policies despite obstacles. He expressed commitment to addressing internal and external criticisms and restoring trust before the next election.



He remarked on the need to focus on Pheu Thai’s transformation, particularly as it returns to opposition. He mentioned the potential dissolution of Parliament within four months, stressing the importance of preparing for elections. He expressed confidence in the party’s potential and discussed plans for mobilizing forces to restore confidence in Pheu Thai.



Regarding Thaksin Shinawatra’s imprisonment, Bhumtham clarified that Thaksin’s decision was separate from the party’s future. He emphasized Thaksin’s personal fight for innocence and the party’s capability to move forward independently. He acknowledged the sympathy for Thaksin and the party’s historical struggles for democracy, noting Thaksin’s contributions to Thailand, including the universal healthcare scheme.
