BMTA Vows Full Compensation and Safety Overhaul Following Makkasan Intersection Tragedy

Bangkok: The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) expresses its deepest regret over the Makkasan intersection accident and reiterates its commitment to providing the highest level of compensation and support. The BMTA is conducting an urgent analysis of the incident to strengthen safety measures on all bus routes.

According to Thai News Agency, on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at approximately 3:40 p.m., the air-conditioned bus No. 206 (3-30) registration number 12-5641 of the BMTA was involved in an accident at the Makkasan railway crossing on Asok-Din Daeng Road. This tragic incident resulted in a fire that affected the bus and nearby vehicles, leading to fatalities and injuries. BMTA officials express their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, the injured, and all those affected.

The BMTA acknowledges that the accident resulted in a significant loss of life and property, emphasizing that it was a preventable event. The authority commits to taking full responsibility in a humanitarian and legal manner. Following the incident, high-ranking officials, including Deputy Minister of Transport Siriphong Angkasakulkiat and BMTA Director Kittikan Chomduang Charuwarapolkul, immediately went to the scene to manage the situation. They coordinated with rescue units, hospitals, and the police to ensure the injured received urgent medical treatment.

BMTA has also coordinated with disaster relief agencies, police, and other relevant units to gather information on all affected individuals. Direct coordination has been established with Muang Thai Insurance Public Company Limited and the Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Protection Act to expedite the compensation process. The initial compensation budget includes 1,500,000 baht per person for fatalities and up to 500,000 baht per person for injuries, with an initial amount of 80,000 baht per injured individual.

BMTA is closely monitoring the identification process of the deceased and facilitating compensation payments to the families. Management is preparing to visit injured individuals at the hospital to provide support and ensure transparency in the compensation process. BMTA will provide continuous updates on progress and further developments.

In response to the incident, BMTA will expedite a review of safety standards across its bus routes in Bangkok and neighboring provinces. This includes stricter enforcement of safety regulations for all BMTA bus drivers. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul inspected the scene on the evening of the accident, accompanied by Deputy Minister of Transport and BMTA executives, directing all relevant agencies to provide the best possible care and expedite compensation.
