Southampton: British police are under immense pressure following an incident where an 18-year-old stabbing victim was handcuffed and subsequently died. The situation has sparked significant controversy and criticism, with footage revealing the victim was restrained while lying in a pool of blood.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred on December 3, 2025, in Southampton, southern England. Vickrum Digwa, a 23-year-old Sikh man, used a ceremonial sword to stab university student Henry Nowak, inflicting severe injuries. Upon police arrival, Digwa falsely claimed Nowak had physically assaulted him and used racist language, leading police to handcuff the wounded Nowak.
Helmet camera footage shows Nowak pleading with police, stating he had been stabbed and was struggling to breathe. Despite his pleas, an officer dismissed his claims, responding, "I don't think she's been stabbed, mate." Nowak lost consciousness soon after, and although police eventually administered first aid, he later died.
On June 1, a Southampton court sentenced Vikram Digwa to life imprisonment for murder, with a minimum of 21 years before parole eligibility. Digwa's mother was convicted of aiding in the concealment of the weapon, and other family members face charges for possessing multiple lethal weapons.
The video's release has led to widespread public outrage. Over 1,000 protesters gathered at Southampton Central Police Station on June 2, clashing with riot police and causing property damage. Conservative and far-right leaders, including Nigel Farage, criticized the police's actions as an example of "double standards in policing," accusing them of fearing racism allegations and mishandling the case.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed deep concern over the incident, highlighting the need to address how fabricated racist allegations influenced police actions. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood urged for calm, emphasizing that the authorities must prioritize assessing risks based on behavior rather than race or religion.
The Independent Office for the Investigation of Police Malfeasance (IOPC) is conducting a thorough investigation. Reports indicate one officer involved has resigned, and three others are under investigation as witnesses.
