Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai people go to temples to make merit, pour water on Buddha images, and plant Tung Cho Tung Chai flags for good fortune in the Lanna New Year or Songkran tradition.
According to Thai News Agency, today marks Wan Phaya Wan, the first day of the new year according to the beliefs of the Lanna people. On this day, Chiang Mai residents visit temples to engage in various merit-making activities. These include offering food to the deceased, bathing Buddha images, and praying for good fortune as the new year begins.
The atmosphere at Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan has been lively since morning, with a large presence of both locals and tourists. They participate in the traditional practice of pouring water over Phra Buddha Sihing, the revered Buddha image of Chiang Mai. Inside the royal chapel, many offer food and other items to honor and dedicate merit to ancestors, close relatives, and friends who have passed away. Participants also receive blessings from monks, aiming to usher in good fortune for the Lanna New Year.
In addition to these rituals, some Chiang Mai residents and tourists have taken part in building sand pagodas. These structures are adorned with Tung Cho and Tung Chai flags and serve as offerings to enhance good fortune. The act is also a dedication of merit to deceased ancestors, further enriching the spiritual significance of the day.
