China Sets National Standards for Humanoid Robots and AI

Beijing: China's burgeoning humanoid robotics industry has taken another step forward with the adoption of its first national standard system on February 28, covering the entire industrial chain and lifecycle of humanoid robots, including embodied AI.

According to Thai News Agency, the standards system was launched at the annual Conference on Humanoid Robots and Physical Artificial Intelligence (HEIS) in Beijing. It comprises six main components: common basic requirements, brain-like intelligent computing systems, limb components and parts, complete machines and systems, applications, and safety and ethics.

The standard was jointly developed by over 120 research institutes, businesses, and industry users under the auspices of the Technical Committee on Humanoid Robot and Physical Artificial Intelligence Standards, affiliated with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The committee stated that the brain-like computing standard covers key requirements for the 'brain and cerebellum' of physical and intelligent artificial intelligence, which will govern all data flow, as well as the training and deployment processes of the models.

Application standards govern the development, operation, and maintenance of humanoid robots in various scenarios, while safety and ethical standards cover the entire industry lifecycle to ensure that technological development adheres to the correct requirements and guidelines.

The adoption of this standard system comes after China's humanoid robotics industry is projected to experience significant growth throughout 2025, supported by medium- and long-term plans from both central and local governments aimed at making it a strategically important sector.

According to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 2025 marks the first year of mass production of humanoid robots in China, with over 140 domestic manufacturers having launched more than 330 robot models.

China expects this new standardization system to be a key guideline for its rapidly expanding industry, promoting high-quality development through standardized technical requirements and safety measures.
