Danupon Punnakanta Remains Silent Amid Criticism of Pheu Thai Decline

Bangkok: Danupon Punnakanta, spokesperson for the Pheu Thai Party, has not responded to criticism regarding the party’s perceived decline and the potential for a reduced number of MPs in the next election. He expressed a desire to connect with Pheu Thai voters, emphasizing the party’s resilience in overcoming past crises.

According to Thai News Agency, Danupon acknowledged recent critiques from academics, former politicians, and current politicians who suggested that Pheu Thai might secure fewer than 100 or even 50 seats in the upcoming election. He described the party as a political institution and stated his intention to accept the criticism as a means to improve, rather than directly addressing the critics.

Danupon reassured Pheu Thai supporters that the party has weathered significant political challenges before. He cited the party’s history, noting its origins as the Thai Rak Thai Party and its ability to recover after being overthrown and dissolved twice. Despite these setbacks, he stated that the party has consistently returned to contest elections and frequently emerged victorious.

He acknowledged that recent events, including the resignation of former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, may be disheartening for some members. However, he pledged that the party is prepared to strengthen and succeed in the forthcoming elections, maintaining confidence in its connection with the people and commitment to introducing policies that support those in need.

Addressing concerns about the new government’s handling of border issues, Danupon noted criticism over the potential reopening of border checkpoints, a point raised by some Prachachon Party MPs. He referenced Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Phumtham Wechayachai’s earlier statement that a committee would consider the matter, and clarity from the new government is awaited. Danupon assured that the party’s leaders and MPs remain dedicated to assisting those affected by ongoing border concerns and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
