Bangkok: DE is taking decisive action against individuals spreading fake news about the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia, urging the public not to believe or share false information and to rely solely on official news sources.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, Deputy Government Spokesperson, highlighted that social media has become a platform for disseminating misleading messages and images regarding the relations between the two countries. This misinformation has led to public misunderstanding, panic, and widespread confusion.
The government, through the Anti-Fake News Center of Thailand and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, investigated and identified 33 news stories related to the issue, 9 of which were confirmed as fake. A particularly concerning piece of fake news falsely claimed that the Thai government was preparing to close six Thai-Cambodian border checkpoints, resulting in public panic. Coordination with the Immigration Bureau and relevant border agencies confirmed that all checkpoints remain operational. The spread of this false information has since been blocked.
Mr. Anukul stressed the sensitivity of the Thai-Cambodian border issue and the detrimental impact of sharing fake news on the situation. He also warned against the spread of AI-generated images and false information, such as rumors about the dismissal of the Third Army Commander. He urged citizens to verify information through official channels and reliable mainstream media before believing or sharing it. The public can confirm information through the Anti-Fake News Center of Thailand or by calling their 24-hour hotline. Reporting suspicious posts or messages can help prevent the spread of fake news.
Mr. Anukul further warned that disseminating false information could violate the Computer Crime Act, punishable by up to 5 years in prison, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both. Citizens can report fake news and online crimes through the hotline, Line ID, or the Anti-Fake News Center's website.
