Defense Council Strengthens Frontline Support Amid Thai-Cambodian Tensions

Bangkok: The National Defence Council has resolved to enhance care for frontline personnel, expedite welfare and benefits, and upgrade border security between Thailand and Cambodia. The council emphasized that military operations adhere to international law and prioritize the protection of civilians.

According to Thai News Agency, at 4:00 PM on December 18, 2025, at the Joint Press Conference Center on the Thai-Cambodian Situation at the Royal Thai Army Television Station, Rear Admiral Surasan Kongsiri, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, announced the results of the 11th/2025 Defence Council meeting. Important resolutions regarding the Thai-Cambodian border situation included the strengthening of logistical support for frontline units and the expedited allocation of allowances, benefits, and welfare to personnel in a timely and accurate manner.

Furthermore, the meeting also emphasized the importance of improving quality of life and education. Most recently, the Ministry of Defence signed a memorandum of understanding with Chulalongkorn University to develop skills enhancement courses and provide preferential educational quotas to military personnel and their families nationwide, in order to create long-term career opportunities.

In terms of border security, the National Defence Council has instructed the integration of forces with security agencies to enhance security along the entire Thai-Cambodian border, while also facilitating and ensuring the safety of the public in the area, especially during the upcoming New Year's festivities.

The meeting emphasized that the operational guidelines for personnel in the area should prioritize the protection of national sovereignty and the security of the public, while strictly adhering to international law on the right to self-defense and humanitarian principles.

Regarding the latest situation, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense stated that the movement of Cambodian troops and equipment into the Poipet area was detected since yesterday, and this morning heavy weapons have been continuously shelling Thai territory along the border.

Later, at 11:15 AM, Thai forces intercepted Cambodian troops assembling inside a warehouse outside Poipet, a military target, in order to deter threats and reassure the public.

The Ministry of Defence affirmed that the Thai military's operations were prudent, proportionate, and aimed at protecting national sovereignty alongside the safety of the public.
