Bangkok: The Deputy Government Spokesperson has clarified the "Land Bridge" issue, stating that 50 billion baht in revenue comes from bunkering and emphasizing that Thailand has genuine potential. Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, addressed observations regarding the Land Bridge project, specifically concerning revenue from the bunkering business, stating that the government respectfully listens to all opinions. However, some points may be based on incomplete understandings, both in terms of the energy industry and international business models.
According to Thai News Agency, the deputy government spokesperson highlighted that Thailand possesses several large oil refineries with a total production capacity that consistently exceeds domestic demand, positioning the country as a key exporter of refined oil products in the region. Thus, suggestions that Thailand 'lacks potential' are inconsistent with the industrial reality. In the context of the bunkering business, the focus isn't solely on having refineries in the area but on developing Thailand into a 'strategic hub' on international shipping routes. This involves a Trading Hub model that emphasizes volume and logistics, a model employed globally.
"The key point to understand is that the estimated 50 billion baht represents 'revenue' from economic activity, not 'net profit' of the government or private sector. Interpreting this figure as direct profit could lead to a misunderstanding of the project's essence," the deputy government spokesperson stated.
For project implementation, the government has designed the scheme to allow the private sector to invest in energy infrastructure, such as oil storage facilities and service systems, through a public-private partnership (PPP) mechanism. The government will play a role in setting direction and developing strategic structures to reduce budgetary burdens and enhance competitiveness.
The deputy government spokesperson further mentioned that national development is the government's responsibility, while the opposition plays a crucial role in scrutinizing, criticizing, and making suggestions. The government is ready to listen constructively. However, any discussions or suggestions should be based on complete information and reasoning to benefit the country as a whole.
"In the past, Thailand has missed many development opportunities due to opposition based on incomplete information or misinterpretations. This not only affected confidence but also impacted the country's long-term economic prospects. Therefore, the government believes that exchanges of opinions should be based on facts in order to jointly drive the country forward," said the deputy government spokesperson.
The spokesperson concluded by emphasizing that the Land Bridge project is a strategic infrastructure project that must be considered as a whole system, not just a few figures. The government affirms that it will proceed cautiously, transparently, and open to all suggestions to ensure maximum benefit for the country.
