Earthquake in Myanmar Sends Tremors Across Thailand

Bangkok: An earthquake measuring 5.3 magnitude struck near the southern coast of Myanmar, approximately 247 kilometers southwest of Mae Sot District, Tak Province, Thailand, at 9:05 AM today. The tremors were felt as far away as Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Chiang Mai, and Lampang.

According to Thai News Agency, the Earthquake Monitoring Division reported that the tremors were noticeable in several areas, particularly in Bangkok. Notable locations included the 12th floor of the MBK Building in Pathumwan, a condominium on the 10th floor in Sathorn, the 14th floor of Siriraj Hospital, a condominium on the 16th floor in Huai Khwang, and the 5th floor of the Thairath Building in Chatuchak. Reports also came from Nonthaburi, Chiang Mai, and Lampang provinces.

Reporters noted that residents in Lampang, especially those in high-rise buildings, felt the tremors. At Lampang Hospital, which houses several tall structures, including the outpatient building, individuals nearby were questioned about the shaking sensation post-earthquake. Many confirmed feeling it, prompting some to evacuate the high-rise buildings temporarily for safety. Similarly, at the Provincial Public Health Office, occupants of the 7-story building evacuated to an open area, waiting for about 15 minutes to ensure no further tremors occurred before gradually returning indoors.
