Nan: Floodwaters approaching from upstream have prompted authorities to issue timely warnings to ensure community safety. The National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) is piloting the installation of innovative "flash flood warning systems" to address this imminent threat.
According to Thai News Agency, Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) is implementing a new "flash flood warning device" in the Wiang Sa District, Nan Province, to improve local flood warning systems. The NRCT is supporting the expansion of these systems to other flood-prone areas. Dr. Wiparat Dee-ong, Director of the NRCT, emphasized the importance of applying research and innovation to address flooding through early warning systems that effectively reach communities during crises.
The initiative, led by Dr. Dee-ong, along with Mr. Banjong Khunphet, Deputy Governor of Nan Province, and other experts, involved inspecting the "Flash Flood Warning System" in Nam Pua Subdistrict, Wiang Sa District. Mr. Khunphet highlighted that the system provides communities with more time to prepare for potential flooding, especially in regions near tributaries that could experience rapid water level rises. This innovation is designed to enhance the efforts of government agencies and local leaders, allowing them to respond more effectively to floods.
Mr. Phubes Wanichchanon from Srinakharinwirot University explained that the warning system was developed with the community's context and limitations in mind. It features three alert levels-preparation, monitoring, and evacuation-enabling residents to make informed decisions during emergencies. The system has been successfully tested in Nam Pua Subdistrict, with plans for further improvements based on real-world results.
Mr. Sumon Tantomkaew, a disaster prevention and mitigation officer at Nam Pua Subdistrict Administrative Organization, noted that the flash flood warning system has allowed officials and the community to monitor water levels and issue timely warnings during rapidly rising water levels. The system's potential expansion to more high-risk areas could further reduce risks to life and property.
The "Flash Flood Warning System," primarily powered by solar cells, can operate even during telephone signal disruptions using shortwave radio communication. It features a simple float system for measuring water levels and provides alerts over a range of approximately 1 kilometer. Plans are in place to transfer this technology to local administrative organizations for long-term maintenance and community benefit.
