Government Implements Flood Relief Measures Ahead of IMF-World Bank Meetings

Accra:The Deputy Government Spokesperson has addressed concerns regarding flood relief measures, affirming that emergency loans and livelihood restoration programs have been in effect since September 26. The government, he stated, is not waiting for the IMF and World Bank meetings to conclude but is actively working to help citizens recover their livelihoods.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, responded to Mr. Korn Chatikavanij's proposal to expedite loan measures for flood victims. Korn, a Member of Parliament and Deputy Leader of the Democrat Party, emphasized the need to assist small business owners and self-employed individuals. Ms. Lalida noted that while the government is open to beneficial proposals, measures such as emergency loans and debt relief have already been implemented since late September.

The Government Savings Bank has enacted measures in line with the Ministry of Finance's policy. These include a three-month moratorium on principal payments and no interest charges for eligible customers. Emergency loans of up to 20,000 baht without collateral and disaster relief loans of up to 50,000 baht are available, both offering a three-month grace period for payments.

Additionally, a micro-recovery loan program is available for disaster victims, allowing loans of up to 300,000 baht per person to repair tools, provide goods, and serve as working capital. This program features 0% interest for the first three months and a maximum repayment period of seven years, with interest calculated at a 15% annual rate from the fourth month onwards.

Ms. Lalida emphasized the importance of verifying information before making proposals, as existing government measures already address these concerns. She highlighted the need to ensure quick approval of loans and to address any barriers small business owners face in accessing funding. The government remains receptive to further suggestions to better meet public needs.

She stressed that flood recovery efforts did not commence with Mr. Korn's proposal and that immediate action has been underway. The government is focused on ensuring that support reaches affected individuals swiftly, enabling them to resume their livelihoods and generate income as soon as possible.
