Bangkok: ‘The King’ has extended his royal care to the victims of the recent bombings in Narathiwat and Pattani, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul confirming the royal intervention. Anutin revealed that the Volunteer Defense Corps (VDP), the primary target of these attacks, were closely monitored by the provincial governors of both regions. He emphasized the need for caution in visiting the affected areas, stating that encouragement is needed but that the time isn’t right for visits.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin highlighted that His Majesty the King has taken the deceased and injured under his royal patronage, ensuring that compensation and care for the families will be closely monitored. The VDP, consisting mainly of assistant village headmen trained to assist and protect local communities, were identified as targets due to their roles in safeguarding the area.
Anutin further stated that while the governors are managing the situation effectively, the central government should refrain from visiting for security reasons. However, a conference with governors from five provinces is planned to reinforce prevention and surveillance strategies. The Ministry of Interior is coordinating with the military and police to manage the situation, supporting administrative functions.
Inquiries about the motives behind the attacks-whether political or otherwise-remain unanswered, as Anutin indicated that analysis is ongoing. He assured that provincial governors and the 4th Army are maintaining vigilance across all areas. The Defense Volunteers are continually trained to protect themselves, with no authority to retaliate against or pursue anyone.
The incident’s timing, following a period of relative calm, is being analyzed, with further directives expected from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Vejjayachai. Anutin assured that the existing strategic plan for the southern border adequately covers all potential scenarios, with a focus on intelligence work, especially during Ramadan-a period historically linked to increased tensions.
Anutin urged for community cooperation in the southern border provinces, emphasizing that acts of violence contradict religious teachings and merit-making traditions, particularly affecting the Muslim community. He advised against escalating tensions through condemnatory rhetoric and highlighted adherence to legal procedures to avoid exacerbating the situation.
