Bangkok: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is set to visit Thailand officially on Monday, following an invitation from Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra. This visit aims to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries and elevate their relationship to a strategic partnership.
According to Thai News Agency, government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap announced that the Thai government is preparing to welcome President Subianto, who will make his first official visit to Thailand since taking office in October 2024. This visit is notable as it marks the first time in 20 years that an Indonesian President has made an official visit to Thailand.
Prime Minister Shinawatra will officially welcome President Subianto at Government House. The agenda includes an official ceremony, comprehensive bilateral discussions, the signing of agreements and memorandums of understanding between various Thai and Indonesian agencies, a joint press conference, and a luncheon hosted in honor of President Subianto and his delegation.
During this visit, the two leaders are expected to announce the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. This development coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Indonesia. The discussions will focus on enhancing cooperation in areas such as security, trade and investment, food security, tourism, education, people-to-people exchanges, and regional collaboration.
Mr. Chirayu noted that this visit represents the first official meeting under the Leaders' Consultation mechanism, a Thai-initiated process encouraging regular meetings between leaders to expedite cooperation between the two nations.
