Yala: One insurgent suspect was shot dead in a joint security operation on Tuesday following an eight-hour standoff in Yala, after security forces cordoned off a house linked to recent gas station arson attacks. A combined task force of military, police, and local administrative officials launched a targeted security operation in Yala's provincial seat early Tuesday, resulting in a deadly eight-hour standoff and one fatality.
According to Thai News Agency, the operation began at approximately 12:20 AM on January 20, at a 1.5-story rental house located in Sateng Nok sub-district. Security forces cordoned off the area to enforce legal measures against suspects believed to be hiding at the premises. Authorities attempted to resolve the situation peacefully by involving local community and religious leaders to negotiate a surrender. However, these efforts proved unsuccessful as the suspects opened fire on the officers, triggering a prolonged gunfight that broke out at 3:50 AM. The exchange of fire continued into the morning.
Upon clearing the scene, officials discovered one suspect had been shot dead. Pol Lt Gen Piyawat Chalermsri, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 9, arrived at the scene to personally oversee the operation. He revealed that the mission was an expansion of the ongoing investigation into the coordinated attacks on January 11, where 11 gas stations in Yala's provincial seat were targeted in synchronized bombings and arson. The suspect has been identified as a high-ranking operative with multiple outstanding arrest warrants.
According to police, he served as a field operations leader for the insurgent group and has been linked to several high-profile attacks, including the raid on the Tha Sap gas station and numerous ambushes against state officials in Yala's provincial seat. Forensic teams are currently conducting a detailed identity verification process. Meanwhile, investigators are widening their probe to track down remaining members of the network and uncover further links to the regional insurgent cell.
Security forces remain on-site to clear the area and conduct a thorough safety inspection. Authorities have seized one firearm from the dead suspect, which is currently undergoing forensic examination. In response to the incident, officials have issued an urgent directive for all units in the region to maintain the highest level of vigilance. Given the suspect's significant role within the insurgent network, authorities warn of potential retaliatory attacks by sympathizers or affiliated cells.
Consequently, security measures have been intensified across the board, including heightened activity at checkpoints, increased surveillance, and reinforced protection for soft targets to ensure public safety and confidence. The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Nasrullah, a key insurgent figure who was the subject of four outstanding security-related arrest warrants. Among his most serious offenses were his alleged roles in a lethal assault on a Civil Defense Volunteer checkpoint that resulted in 15 fatalities, as well as the fatal shooting of a married couple. For these incidents, he faced grave charges including the premeditated murder of state officials and acts of violence endangering life and liberty. Furthermore, his remaining warrants involved charges of sedition and inciting public unrest through means intended to undermine the constitutional order.
