Bremen: A remarkably intelligent cormorant sought medical assistance by arriving at a veterinary hospital in Bremen, northern Germany, to have its injuries examined.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident took place last Sunday when the cormorant was seen banging on the glass door of the hospital's emergency room. A nurse on duty observed that the bird seemed aware it was at a facility for treating injuries. It approached the emergency room entrance, making loud noises on the glass, seemingly asking for help. Initially unnoticed, the cormorant persisted by moving to another entrance and banging again until staff recognized its need for assistance.
The head of the emergency department noted that a fishing hook was lodged in the bird's beak, causing its injury. As it was a hospital, staff contacted the local fire department, experienced in handling wildlife incidents. The firefighters managed to safely restrain the cormorant, covering it with a blanket to provide warmth and ease its anxiety. They used tools to remove the fishing hook and examined the bird's mouth, finding no additional wounds. Once assured of the cormorant's wellbeing, they released it back into its natural habitat.
A nurse expressed uncertainty about how the cormorant recognized the hospital as a place for help but was pleased to assist in its recovery. Cormorants are noted for their intelligence and problem-solving abilities, and their choice of a busy, illuminated area when injured showcases their survival instincts. Presently, the cormorant population in Germany remains stable and is on an upward trend.
