Kanchanaburi:An investigation has commenced at a psychiatric elderly care center in Kanchanaburi amid allegations of abuse and confinement reported by the residents. Five elderly individuals, who have been classified under the "yellow" risk category indicating a serious condition, have been hospitalized for further treatment. Additionally, psychiatric patients have been relocated to a shelter for ongoing care.
According to Thai News Agency, the investigation is being led by Dr. Phuwadej Surakhot, Director-General of the Department of Health Service Support, and Ms. Pannipa Pinampootra, Deputy Governor of Kanchanaburi. A team comprising doctors and experts from Phaholpolpayuhasena Hospital, Makarak Hospital, and the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Unit of the Kanchanaburi Provincial Public Health Office conducted assessments of the residents' physical and mental health. The team visited the care center located in Tha Muang District following reports of physical abuse and unlawful confinement of elderly residents brought in by their families.
The multidisciplinary team's screening results categorized the residents into three symptom levels: green, yellow, and red. Out of a total of 92 people, five were found to be in the yellow category, 81 in the green category, and six exhibited physical symptoms. The five patients in the yellow category have been referred for further treatment, with three being sent to Somdej Chao Phraya Hospital and two to the Kalyarajanagarindra Institute.
The authorities plan to transfer those remaining at the center who have physical ailments to hospitals for treatment. Psychiatric patients will be moved to appropriate public or private shelters and medical facilities to ensure they receive safe and suitable care, considering the patients' and their families' needs.
On the law enforcement front, Police Colonel Pitak Wongpanich, superintendent of Tha Muang Police Station, mentioned that officers are ready to handle additional complaints. Previously, the police station's role was limited to providing security as complaints were filed with the Crime Suppression Division.
