Tehran: Iranian media reports that a decision has been made regarding the new Supreme Leader.
According to Thai News Agency, the Council of Experts, the body empowered to appoint the new Supreme Leader, has reached a majority consensus on his successor, but is still facing some obstacles.
Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency reported today, citing Ayatollah Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, a member of the council of experts, that the council has reached a majority consensus on who will succeed the 86-year-old Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei as Supreme Leader, who died in a US-Israeli attack, but that some obstacles remain.
The report indicates that the council of experts disagreed slightly on whether a face-to-face meeting should be held before announcing the new Supreme Leader. Ayatollah Mohsen Haidari Azqasir, another member of the expert council, believed that a traditional meeting was difficult given the current situation with Iran under US and Israeli airstrikes. He argued that they should follow the guidance of the previous Supreme Leader, who said that Iran's Supreme Leader should be someone hated by their enemies, not admired by them. Even the "Great Satan," referring to the United States, had to be mentioned by name after US President Donald Trump referred to Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, the son of the late Khamenei, as an unacceptable choice for Iran's new Supreme Leader.
The Israeli military posted on the X platform in Farsi, the Iranian language, that it would continue to hunt down any successor to Iran's Supreme Leader and would deal with anyone attempting to appoint a new leader, referring to the council of experts preparing to select Iran's Supreme Leader.
