Mueang Samut Prakan: A two-story house collapsed during demolition, injuring four people, one of whom was trapped under the debris. Rescuers had to race against time, but have now been able to bring them out.
According to Thai News Agency, the Por Tek Tung Foundation Rescue Unit received a report from the Prakan Rescue Radio Center, hotline 1669, about a building collapse in Soi Theparak 70, Theparak Subdistrict, Mueang Samut Prakan District. The incident involved a 2-story house, composed of brick and wood, undergoing demolition by a contractor. The collapse resulted in injuries to four individuals, three of whom were initially rescued and transported to a nearby hospital.
The fourth individual, identified as a 26-year-old Myanmar man named Wan, was trapped under the house. Rescuers, responding to his cries for help, employed urgent measures to extricate him. After considerable effort, the team successfully rescued Wan, who sustained a leg injury. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.
Mr. Khomsan, a local resident, recounted that the house, over 30 years old, was rented out and had become dilapidated. After the last tenant vacated, the owner opted for demolition to construct a garage. Mr. Khomsan witnessed the collapse at 8:20 a.m., during the second day of demolition. The structure fell within half an hour of commencement, trapping one worker while others managed to escape. Villagers attempted to assist but were hindered by fears of further collapse.
Mr. Wachirachet Rungthawatwong, Mayor of Theparak Subdistrict Municipality, stated that the demolition, which began the day prior, lacked proper authorization. The incident resulted in four injuries: two classified as serious, one minor, and Wan's leg injury. The collapse was partially mitigated by beams creating a cavity, preventing further injury. Initial investigations suggest improper demolition procedures, specifically starting from below. Authorities plan to secure the remaining structure to prevent additional hazards and identify the contractor responsible.
