Lionel Messi Retires from Argentine National Football Team

Buenos Aires:Lionel Messi, the legendary footballer and captain of Argentina's national team, concluded his remarkable 21-year international career with an impressive performance in a friendly match against Benin.

According to Thai News Agency, Messi, aged 39, scored one goal and provided two assists, leading his team to a 3-0 victory in front of over 85,000 fans at the Estadio Monumental. The match served as a farewell celebration for Messi's contributions to the national team.

The capital city honored Messi's legacy with landmarks illuminated in blue and white, the national team's colors, and fireworks lighting up the sky as fans joined in singing the Argentinian national anthem. A giant number 10 shirt with "Gracias" was displayed at the flag monument in Rosario, Messi's hometown, earlier in the day.

Following the match, Messi was embraced by teammates, opponents, and referees. A drone light show followed, and Argentinian singer Soledad Pastorutti performed "Brindis" to honor Messi's illustrious career with the national team.

In a post-match interview, Messi expressed pride in wearing the national jersey for over two decades and reflected on his father's recent passing. He shared his desire to continue playing for Argentina, describing it as an unparalleled joy.

Messi retires as the record holder for the most appearances with 208 matches and as Argentina's all-time leading scorer. His leadership brought Argentina significant success, including victories in the World Cup and Copa America, despite previous disappointments on the international stage.
