Marches in Denmark Show Support for Greenland Amid U.S. Tensions

Copenhagen: Large numbers of people gathered in both the Danish capital and Greenland to show support for Greenland and to call on the United States to stay out of Greenland's affairs. Large numbers of people gathered in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, yesterday to show support for Greenland, waving Greenlandic flags and chanting slogans such as "Leave Greenland alone" and "Greenland for Greenlanders." This demonstration coincided with a visit by U.S. congressional members to meet with Danish and Greenlandic government officials, aiming to de-escalate tensions through a pledge of congressional support.

According to Thai News Agency, in recent weeks, U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to seize this Arctic island territory, citing its strategic location and abundant mineral resources as reasons for its importance to U.S. security, and not ruling out the possibility of using force to occupy the land. This increasingly aggressive stance by the U.S. leader has led European countries to collectively send a number of troops to Greenland this week at the request of Denmark, demonstrating Europe's solidarity with Denmark and support for Greenland. Meanwhile, Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has rejected the idea of becoming part of the United States.

Meanwhile, European leaders have strongly disagreed with Trump's announcement that he will impose an additional 10 percent tariff starting February 1 on eight European countries that are obstructing the US attempts to take over Greenland until the US is able to purchase the island. The tariff will rise to 25 percent on June 1 and will remain in effect until an agreement is reached for the US to take over Greenland.
