Sicily: A widespread landslide on the Italian island of Sicily has led to significant destruction, with homes demolished and thousands of residents forced to evacuate. Many structures remain precariously perched on the brink of collapse.
According to Thai News Agency, the landslide occurred on a high plateau in the central-southeast region of Sicily, stretching over 4 kilometers and forming cliffs between 20 to 45 meters high. Numerous buildings along these cliffs are in immediate danger of collapsing. Previous landslides have already caused several houses and vehicles to tumble into the ravine below; however, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities. Authorities have evacuated more than 1,500 individuals from the impacted area.
Beyond the primary landslide site, several large fissures have appeared across different parts of Sicily due to ongoing soil movement. This catastrophic event followed heavy rainfall brought by Cyclone Harry. The intense downpour saturated the soil, leading to its collapse along existing fault lines. In response, the Italian government has declared a state of emergency and established a danger zone extending 150 meters from the cliff edge.
