Bangkok: The Metropolitan Police Chief confirmed that no officers were involved in the robbery of e-cigarettes. The investigation is being expedited with preparations underway to inspect the evidence in the warehouse.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, reported on the arrest of 7 individuals involved in the theft of e-cigarettes. Initial investigations did not implicate any Customs Department officers in the theft, but efforts are being made to determine if others were involved.
During interrogations, the suspects revealed varying accounts of their involvement, with some claiming it was their first offense while others admitted to previous thefts. The police remain skeptical of these claims. Mr. Son, a temporary employee and repairman, was familiar with Mr. Lek, a security guard, as they worked in proximity. Mr. Son exploited his observations of officials storing evidence, noting the ease of access to the area. He coordinated with other perpetrators to steal e-cigarettes for online sale.
Since the beginning of the year, over 1 million e-cigarettes have been seized and handed over to the Customs Department. Coordination is ongoing to inspect and verify the remaining evidence. The crackdown has increased the value and demand for e-cigarettes, prompting criminals to steal and sell them online as per orders.
