Mexico’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony Showcases Cultural Heritage

Mexico city: Mexico hosted a grand official opening ceremony for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Estadio Azteca, marking the beginning of the tournament with a display of pre-Spanish colonial culture. The event included performances by Shakira and Berna Boy, who sang the official World Cup song, "Dai Dai," alongside Andrea Bocelli and Lee Jae, who performed "DNA." The ceremony featured a fireworks and light show.

According to Thai News Agency, the Mexican national team started the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over South Africa. Juli¡n Ghillones scored in the 9th minute, and Raºl Jim©nez added another goal in the 67th minute. The win places Mexico at the top of Group A, ahead of their next match against South Korea.

Mexico's coach, Javier Aguirre, recognized areas for improvement despite the successful start. He noted that the team's mistakes were due to the excitement and pressure of the opening match. Meanwhile, Mexican fans celebrated energetically at both the Azteca Stadium and the ngel de la Independencia Monument.

In the same group, South Korea defeated the Czech Republic 2-1, with goals from Hwang In-bum and Oh Hyun-gyu. This result places South Korea level with Mexico on goal difference. The two teams will face off in Guadalajara on June 18th.
