Bangkok: Sabida Thaiseth, the Minister of Culture, recently attended a Khon performance at the National Theatre to test the newly installed lighting and sound systems.
According to Thai News Agency, the event, organized by the Fine Arts Department's Bureau of Performing Arts, was part of "Opening the Curtain of the National Theatre: A Journey Back to the Past of Thai Dramatic Arts," held on May 9-10, 2026. This initiative allowed the public to experience the upgraded facilities of the theatre, which had undergone a significant renovation over three years to meet international standards.
The National Theatre, a prominent venue for over 60 years, received a major renovation funded by the Fine Arts Department in 2022. The renovation included the installation of state-of-the-art European-standard equipment, a new Active Field Control (AFC) sound system, and a digitally controlled electrical stage system to enhance precision and safety. The lighting system was upgraded to digital technology and LED lights, while the projector system now allows for both front and back image projection, adding to the audience's viewing enjoyment.
The renovation also focused on redesigning the interior space, including audience seating, building walls, and safety systems like the fire alarm and escape stairs, to improve comfort and safety. With a seating capacity of 1,001, the theatre now stands as a modernized venue ready to host both Thai and international performances.
Due to high public interest, additional performances are scheduled for May 16-17, 2026, featuring the Khon "Ramayana: Kesornthamala Plee Cheewan" and the Lakorn Phanthang "Phu Chana Sip Thit: Mae Thap Mai Mai." Tickets for these events have also been fully booked. Audience feedback from these performances will be used to refine the systems further before the theatre's final handover and official opening.
