Muay Thai Popularity Surges as Foreign Interest Grows in Phuket

Phuket: The trend of learning Muay Thai continues to grow after the Soft Power group visited a boxing camp in Phuket province. The Sports Industry Promotion Committee, led by Asst. Prof. Pimol Srivikorn, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Promotion of the Sports Industry, along with a delegation including Mr. Somchai Poolsawat, Mr. Paitoon Chutimakornkul, General Orachai Bunsukjitseri, and Mr. Nattapol Antrasen, Director of the Office of the Boxing Commission, visited the Thaiger Muay Thai Camp in Phuket province to survey and exchange knowledge on Muay Thai training, professional athlete development, and sports tourism promotion.

According to Thai News Agency, within the camp, there are training demonstrations, boxing techniques, and discussions with athletes and trainers about raising their potential and competition standards. Asst. Prof. Pimol stated that Thai Tiger Muay Thai Camp is considered a high-standard camp with two branches in Thailand and four or five franchises in Indonesia, the Philippines, and China. It is recognized throughout Asia, with over 99% of its visitors being foreigners. During peak season, over 700 students attend classes per day, with average tuition of 700-800 baht per person. During low season, there are around 300 students per day. The camp also provides accommodation at an average rate of over 1,000 baht per night, generating significant income for the country.

Regarding the 180-day visa-free stay for Muay Thai learners, Asst. Prof. Pimol said, "I asked the boxing camp administrators and they said some people come for three months, six months, and even a full year. If they can get this visa, which the government has created, they can stay without worrying about having to run out to renew their visas in Singapore or Malaysia. Once they arrive, they can continue in Thailand. They can continue for a full year. This is beneficial and enjoyable for them."

The Muay Thai Soft Power team also visited Sinbee Muay Thai Camp, which focuses on traditional Muay Thai training. This trip reflects the collaboration between the government and Muay Thai camps in Phuket to promote Muay Thai to international standards and build a network to support the sports industry nationwide.
