Naypyidaw: Myanmar's National Assembly Speaker Aung Lin Dwe announced today that the parliament will hold a joint vote on Friday to elect a new president. Former military commander-in-chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing is one of the expected candidates.
According to Thai News Agency, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, 69, led a coup in 2021 that overthrew the democratically elected government of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, leading to protracted clashes between the military and opposition groups within the country. He announced his resignation as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces on Monday, after 15 years in the position. On the same day, he was nominated by the House of Representatives as one of the candidates for vice president, along with two other candidates nominated by the Senate and a representative from the military in parliament.
