Nisit Sindhuphrai Arrested After Six Years on the Run in ASEAN Summit Case

Bangkok: Nisit Sindhuphrai, a former member of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), has been apprehended in Roi Et after evading authorities for six years in connection with the ASEAN Summit controversy. The arrest was carried out by officers from Division 3 of the Crime Suppression Division.

According to Thai News Agency, the arrest was made on the basis of an outstanding warrant issued by the Pattaya Provincial Court on November 1st, 2019. The warrant, numbered 618/2562, charged Nisit with offenses against state security, public disorder, property damage, and trespassing. After his arrest, he was transported to the Pattaya Provincial Court in Chonburi Province for further legal proceedings.

Nisit Sindhuphrai has a political background as a former Member of Parliament for Roi Et Province. He was associated with the Pheu Thai, People’s Power, and Thai Rak Thai parties. His arrest stems from his involvement in the 2009 protests, which led to the disruption of the ASEAN Summit at the Royal Cliff Hotel. Nisit had previously been sentenced to four years in prison but failed to appear in court, prompting his flight. Nisit is also known as the father of Jiraporn Sindhuphrai, a former Prime Minister’s Office minister in the Settha-Paethongtarn government and a member of the Pheu Thai Party.
