Karachi: Pakistan and Iraq protested against the US attack on Iran. Pakistan and Iraq, both with large Shia Muslim populations, have seen massive protests against the United States following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
According to Thai News Agency, in Karachi, Pakistan, fierce clashes erupted between police and protesters attempting to breach the outer walls of the U.S. consulate, resulting in at least nine deaths and 32 injuries. The protesters were angered by attacks by the U.S. and Israel.
Meanwhile, in Iraq, a massive group of pro-Iran protesters blockaded the entrance to Baghdad's Green Zone, where the US embassy is located, amidst tight security. Iraqi security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd and deployed troops around the embassy to prevent protesters from breaching the barricades.
Pakistan and Iraq have the largest Shia Muslim populations after Iran, raising concerns that the protests could escalate into attacks on wider Western targets.
