Parliamentary Candidate Arrested in Major Drug Money Laundering Case

Bangkok: A parliamentary candidate from a prominent party has been arrested on charges of involvement in a drug money laundering case. Police launched Operation Black Mirror TKP, dismantling a drug trafficking network targeting 22 locations and issuing 7 arrest warrants. At 6:00 AM this morning, the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) launched a large-scale operation with over 120 police officers and members of the Special Operations Unit participating.

According to Thai News Agency, the operation targeted drug trafficking networks across Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Lopburi, and Trang provinces. Police Lieutenant General Achayon Kraithong, Commander of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, presided over the operation, aiming to end 2025 on a decisive note against drug networks. One key location searched was a luxury house in Bang Chueak Nang Subdistrict, where a Thai husband and a Laotian wife were arrested, and several luxury items were seized.

Pol. Gen. Samran Nualma, Deputy Commissioner General of the Royal Thai Police, revealed that the operation followed the arrest of a Laotian drug trafficking ring in February. Investigations showed the ring's involvement in multiple cases and the establishment of a network of shell companies with significant financial turnover linked to drug trafficking.

The Narcotics Suppression Police's raid on 22 locations resulted in seven arrests related to money laundering and drug trafficking. Among those arrested was a parliamentary candidate from a well-known political party, suspected of receiving payments from the drug network. Evidence, including financial trails and confessions, supported the issuance of an arrest warrant.

Pol. Gen. Samran emphasized the comprehensive nature of the operation, aligning with government policy and police directives to combat drug smuggling and money laundering. Coordination with the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) is underway to seize assets linked to the illegal activities.

During the New Year's holiday season, the National Police Chief has instructed increased vigilance against drug smuggling, reinforcing efforts to ensure public safety and security.
