Phang nga: Phang Nga held a ceremony to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the tsunami that struck the Andaman coast, paying respects to those who died and went missing at Ban Nam Khem.
According to Thai News Agency, on December 26, 2025, at the Tsunami Memorial in Ban Nam Khem, Bang Muang Subdistrict, Takua Pa District, Phang Nga Province, the Bang Muang Subdistrict Administrative Organization, along with Takua Pa District, the Phang Nga Provincial Administrative Organization, and the tsunami victim network, organized an event to mark this somber anniversary. The tsunami hit six Andaman provinces-Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Ranong, Trang, and Satun-on December 26, 2004. Mr. Damrong Chimthap, the District Chief of Takua Pa, presided over the ceremony, which included religious rites from Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam, along with a flower-laying ceremony. Many local residents and foreign tourists attended the event, bringing photographs, food offerings, and bouquets as tributes.
Phang Nga Province experienced significant damage from the tsunami, leading to numerous deaths and property losses. The Bang Muang Subdistrict Administrative Organization holds annual events to commemorate the disaster, which include moments of silence, flower-laying ceremonies, and religious rites for those who perished and went missing. Currently, the area has been restored with no visible signs of the past devastation, although tsunami memorials remain as reminders of the natural disaster’s impact. These commemorative events are significant for both the local and international community, attracting tourists each year.
