Police Oppose Bail for Soldier Accused of Raping Teenager

Nonthaburi: The soldier accused of raping a 15-year-old girl remained silent while being transferred to custody. Police opposed bail, citing the severity of the crime, the high penalty, and concerns about witness interference and escape.

According to Thai News Agency, investigators from Chanasongkhram Police Station took Private Phasit, a soldier from the Headquarters Company, 1st Army Area, to the Military Court on Srisaman Road, Pak Kret District, for his first 12-day remand. He faces three charges: rape by force against a person who was unable to resist or was deceived into believing the perpetrator was someone else; abduction of a minor (over 15 but under 18 years old) from their parents, guardians, or caregivers against the minor's will; and unlawful detention or deprivation of liberty. The incident reportedly occurred on April 15th inside a restroom while people were celebrating Songkran on Khao San Road. CCTV footage clearly shows the suspect in the incident.

While being escorted to the prisoner transport vehicle, the press attempted to ask if he wanted to apologize to the victim or say anything, but the suspect refused to answer any questions. He remained silent and quickly walked into the vehicle, sitting with his head down, not answering a single question from the media.

Investigators stated that the soldier who committed the act reported to investigators early this morning to be informed of the charges. He was interrogated until the case was completed, and the entire file was compiled for detention today. The bail application included a request to deny bail due to the severity of the crime, the high penalty, the potential for witness interference, and the possibility of escape.
