Pollution Control Department Investigates Contaminated Water in Rangsit Canal

Rangsit:The Pollution Control Department (PCD) has conducted an inspection of the black water in Rangsit Canal, finding low oxygen levels. They are urgently investigating the presence of contaminants and are working towards restoring water quality.

According to Thai News Agency, the PCD inspected the dark, foamy water in Khlong Rangsit Prayursak and discovered low dissolved oxygen levels, likely caused by floodwaters carrying organic matter and detergents into the canal. The Royal Irrigation Department is coordinating with the Department of Land Development to use Super PD (Super Biologics) to treat the wastewater and improve water quality.

Mr. Surin Worakitthamrong, Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, reported that inspections at three locations revealed dark, foul-smelling water with white foam, though no dead aquatic life was found. Dissolved oxygen measurements were between 1.18 and 1.80 milligrams per liter, indicating severe water degradation.

The suspected initial cause is the drainage of floodwaters, which introduced organic matter and detergents into the canal, leading to decomposition and pollution. The operation of large water pumps may have contributed to the formation of white foam deposits.

Further investigations are planned to confirm the source of the pollution, with additional water samples to be collected from key locations. These samples will be tested for heavy metals and volatile organic compounds to assess contamination risks.

The PCD is also conducting preliminary water quality tests, distributing bio-fermented water, and providing clean drinking water to affected communities. The public is advised to avoid direct contact with the canal water due to potential pathogens and to refrain from dumping waste into the waterway.

Mr. Witthaya Kaewmee, Director-General of the Royal Irrigation Department, emphasized the collaboration of agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives in resolving the water quality issues. Efforts include using Super PD to treat wastewater and monitoring the situation closely for effective solutions.
