Bangkok: The Prachachart Party has called on the government to urgently identify and penalize those responsible for the attempted assassination of MP Kamolsak Leewamoh. The party expressed concerns over the potential impact on public confidence in the region. Kamolsak himself remains uncertain if the attack was politically motivated, emphasizing his lack of personal conflicts.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Col. Tawee Sodsong, leader of the Prachachart Party, held a press conference along with party MPs regarding the incident involving Mr. Kamolsak, a Member of Parliament for Narathiwat. The attack, described as heinous, involved the use of a military-grade M16 rifle, with 33 spent casings discovered at the scene near Kamolsak's residence. The shooting occurred following the Prime Minister's vote as Kamolsak was returning home in Narathiwat. The party stressed the grave nature of the incident, noting it took place on a major highway during a period of increased security.
The party urged the police and relevant authorities to intensify their investigation efforts, which have so far been unable to apprehend the attackers. They called for a comprehensive investigation to identify not only the perpetrators but also those who orchestrated the attack. The incident has instilled fear and anxiety among the public, given that Kamolsak is a highly voted representative of the people.
Police Colonel Tawee further revealed that a police officer accompanying Kamolsak was critically injured, having been shot in the eye socket. The officer's condition remains uncertain. The party reiterated its commitment to justice, equality, and fairness, advocating for a political system guided by justice. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has pledged to expedite the investigation, aiming for a thorough probe and the arrest of those involved.
The Prachachart Party envisions peace and safety in the South, urging the government to tackle the issue of illegal weapons, particularly their distribution to government officials. Mr. Kamolsak expressed gratitude for the support from the party and the public, and called for a diligent investigation into potential motives. He remains hopeful that the police will apprehend the attackers and uncover the mastermind behind the plot.
The incident has broader implications, affecting investor and tourist confidence in the three southern border provinces. Kamolsak emphasized the need to resolve these issues to prevent further adverse effects on the local population.
