Bangkok: Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has once again voiced concerns about the fire that broke out following the collapse of a crane on Rama 2 Road, highlighting the ongoing issues with safety improvements. He emphasized the incident as a significant loss for the country and stressed that there is a need for immediate action to prevent further occurrences.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin expressed his shock during an interview, mentioning that he had just concluded a cabinet meeting where Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Pipat Ratchakitprakarn was expected to report on such incidents. Anutin clarified that the agency responsible for the project is accountable, specifically pointing to the Department of Highways, which manages the Rama 2 site. He stated that the government would initiate administrative action, potentially terminating the contract with the contractor involved.
Addressing concerns about repeated fires potentially being attempts to destroy evidence, Anutin, who is also an engineer, underscored the importance of meticulous planning and project control. He shared an example from his past experience with a multinational company that achieved a significant safety milestone, attributing it to careful planning and oversight. He argued that the damage caused by the collapsed crane was evident and that destroying evidence now would be futile.
Regarding compensation demands from tourism operators, Anutin instructed the Department of Highways and other relevant agencies to bypass contract terms and proceed under administrative law due to the public hazard posed. He highlighted the public's loss of confidence, noting the congestion on Phetkasem Road as travelers avoid Rama II Road despite substantial investments. He blamed construction contractors for these recurring issues.
Anutin also addressed criticisms regarding his handling of such incidents. He explained that while some criticized him for inaction, others warned against potential losses. However, he believes that amending laws and regulations is necessary, even if it involves legal challenges. He emphasized that the real damage lies in the loss of innocent lives, which necessitates urgent and decisive action.
He reiterated that any familial ties, such as alleged connections to company owners, were irrelevant and that the focus should remain on resolving the current issues. Anutin called for the termination of contracts with responsible parties, stressing the need for robust safety measures. He concluded that while he has fulfilled his duties, it is now up to the implementing agencies to act decisively, emphasizing the importance of resolving these projects efficiently.
