Bangkok: The Prime Minister has initiated a sweeping reform of the visa systems, emphasizing quality to deter crime and block the infiltration of visa networks by nominees. The initiative includes stricter screening measures and a restructuring of Thailand's tourism strategy to prioritize quality over quantity.
According to Thai News Agency, the Prime Minister has appointed Pakorn Nilapraphan as chairman of a working group tasked with revising application requirements and deadlines. The government is contemplating the abolition of the 60-day visa-free entry program to address issues related to influential figures and transnational nominees.
Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul held a meeting with Bhumjaithai Party ministers to discuss a large-scale immigration crackdown. He noted that many foreigners, entering the country under various visas such as student, investment, and marriage visas, are engaging in nominee businesses or criminal activities detrimental to the nation.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister directed a comprehensive review of all visa types, with Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilapraphan leading a working group to establish new evaluation criteria. The official appointment of this group is to be proposed at the Cabinet meeting.
Surasak Panjaroenvorakul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, announced plans to revoke the 60-day visa-free entry policy. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will present this proposal at the Cabinet meeting. Future visa approvals will involve more stringent checks, with factors beyond financial capability considered.
The government assures that these changes will not affect legally entered foreigners but are intended to enhance security screening standards. This initiative aims to shift Thailand's tourism strategy from high volume to high quality, fostering sustainable economic benefits.
