Prime Minister Orders Investigation into Gold Smuggling to Cambodia


Bangkok: The Prime Minister, leading his economic team, engaged in discussions with the Federation of Thai Industries, emphasizing the need to investigate gold smuggling activities to Cambodia.



According to Thai News Agency, the meeting, which took place on September 15th, reiterated the government’s stance on keeping the Thai-Cambodian border crossing closed and tasked the Finance Minister with probing the gold smuggling issue. The Prime Minister also introduced the upcoming “Half-Half” scheme as a means to boost the economy, indicating that the continuation of the land bridge project requires a comprehensive consultation process.



Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the media following his session with the Federation of Thai Industries, revealing that he had discussions with the President and Board of Directors about the industry’s needs and the challenges the government must tackle. The talks covered a wide range of topics, including Thailand’s industrial potential, competitive trade dynamics, and the Thai-Cambodian border concerns. The Prime Minister also touched on ASEAN regional cooperation and Thailand’s role as an economic and industrial hub.



Regarding the border issue, Mr. Anutin acknowledged existing challenges but affirmed that reopening it is not currently an option, opting instead for military and diplomatic measures once the government’s operations commence. Addressing the impact of the strengthening baht, he recognized the urgency of the situation, with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanpraphas scheduled to meet with the Federation of Thai Industries later that day.



On the matter of gold smuggling, the Prime Minister confirmed that he has directed Mr. Ekniti to conduct an investigation and take action against any discovered irregularities. He assured the public that economic stimulus measures are in the pipeline and will be implemented promptly once the government is fully functional.



Mr. Anutin also expressed optimism about the “Half-Half” scheme, encouraging citizens to prepare for its benefits. He noted that the Finance Minister will outline the detailed plans upon full government administration. Additionally, in response to calls from the Senate Committee for a delay in the land bridge project, Mr. Anutin emphasized the importance of a multi-dimensional approach, considering future growth drivers and Thailand’s strategic position within ASEAN to maximize national economic benefits.
