Probation for ‘Drunk Driving’ on Thai New Year’s Day, 219 Cases

Bangkok: Drunk driving probation for Thai New Year, 219 cases, preparing for social service to shake up consciousness today (April 14, 2025), Pol. Maj. Col. Suriya Singhakamol, Director-General of the Department of Probation, emphasized strict control measures during the Songkran Festival 2025 for probationers in land traffic cases, especially behavior tracking via electronic tracking devices (EM) as ordered by the court, along with cooperation with local police stations to support the tracking of data from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor driving behavior on the road, including providing social services by helping to care for those injured or disabled from accidents, including taking tours of morgues to stimulate consciousness and awareness of the various losses that have occurred.

According to Thai News Agency, the Director-General of the Probation Department revealed that on the third day of implementing strict control measures during the Songkran Festival (April 13, 2025), there were 224 probation cases in which the court issued a probation order, divided into 219 drunk driving cases (97.77 percent) and 5 drug driving cases (2.23 percent).

While the cumulative number of cases during the first 3 days of the Songkran Festival was 1,579 cases and the number of cases with EM equipment remained the same at 15, divided into driving under the influence of alcohol: 1,472 cases (93.22%), 4 cases with EM installed, reckless driving: 3 cases (0.19%), driving under the influence: 104 cases (6.59%), 11 cases with EM installed.

The province with the highest number of drunk driving cases was Chiang Mai with 136 cases, followed by Samut Prakan with 123 cases, and Bangkok with 118 cases. When comparing the statistics of cases entering probation on the 3rd day of 2024, it was found that there were 242 drunk driving cases and 219 cases in 2025, a decrease of 23 cases.

In addition, the Director-General of the Probation Department has also urged all probation offices nationwide to provide services to receive cases and provide advice to probationers continuously even on holidays, and to support 87 public service points, checkpoints, and community checkpoints, with a total of 1,938 personnel working, and to organize public relations campaigns, with 356 participants.
