PTT and Department of Business Development Initiate Energy Conservation Measures Amid Middle East Tensions

Bangkok: Various organizations in Thailand have announced energy conservation measures in collaboration with the government to address the ongoing energy crisis exacerbated by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the war in the Middle East.

According to Thai News Agency, PTT Public Company Limited (PTT) has implemented several energy-saving initiatives for its employees. These measures include allowing employees to work from home three days a week, turning off office lights during lunch hours and after 7 PM, setting the office air conditioning to 26 degrees Celsius, reducing travel, encouraging carpooling, adopting a more casual dress code, prioritizing online meetings, and encouraging the use of stairs over elevators.

Mr. Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, Director-General of the Department of Business Development, Ministry of Commerce, highlighted the impact of the conflict between the United States and Israel in Iran on global energy resources. The Cabinet has mandated government agencies to reduce energy consumption and enhance resource management efficiency starting March 11, 2026, without compromising their services to the public.

The Department of Business Development has established seven key measures in response to the government's policy. These include maintaining office temperatures at 26-27 degrees Celsius, scheduling air conditioning usage, conducting online meetings, adopting a relaxed dress code, turning off unused lights and computers, promoting carpooling, and implementing work-from-home arrangements. Additional measures involve inspecting government vehicles to control air pollution and using resources efficiently. Despite promoting remote work, public and business services will continue as usual, with potential budget savings of up to 5 percent if the measures prove successful.
