Record Cold Snap Hits Doi Inthanon with Temperatures Plummeting to -3.2 Degrees Celsius

CHIANG MAI: The renowned Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai Province has recorded an unprecedented low temperature of -3.2 degrees Celsius, creating frosty conditions along the roadsides and attracting numerous tourists despite the biting cold. The drop follows a new air pressure wave affecting the northern region, leading to significant drops in temperature and increased tourist activity.

According to Thai News Agency, the cold weather has not deterred tourists, who have flocked to the popular check-in point at Doi Inthanon, Chom Thong District, since early morning. The influx of visitors has resulted in heavy traffic, with temperatures averaging just 2 degrees Celsius at the check-in area. The record low of -3.2 degrees Celsius on the grass tops is the coldest experienced in several years, resulting in extensive patches of frost that adorn the grass and leaves. Tourists, shivering in the cold, have come prepared with warm clothing and blankets to combat the chill.

At the Kiew Mae Pan viewpoint, tourists eagerly gathered along the road to witness the sea of fog, described as dense and fluffy like cotton. Many visitors seized the opportunity to capture the scenic beauty through photographs. The highest temperature on the mountain's peak was reported to be 5 degrees Celsius. In response to the high volume of traffic, officials have organized public transportation services, charging 30 baht for trips to and from the mountain peak, in an effort to decrease the number of private vehicles and alleviate parking constraints.

This event marks the 10th frost occurrence of the current winter season. On the previous day, a total of 7,274 tourists visited the area to experience the chilly weather, comprising 6,575 Thai nationals and 672 international visitors. The enduring appeal of Doi Inthanon continues to draw visitors despite the harsh temperatures, contributing to its reputation as a major tourist attraction during the winter months.
