Bangkok: The Royal Thai Police have initiated discussions with LINE Thailand to block all forms of illegal chat rooms within the LINE application. This strategic move aims to fortify cooperation by mid-year and curb the rising tide of criminal activities conducted through the app.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong Phiwphan, Deputy Inspector General of the Royal Thai Police and Deputy Director of the Cyber Crime Prevention and Suppression Center (CCPSC), announced that he convened a meeting with representatives from LINE Thailand. The discussions focused on blocking personal and group communication channels exploited for online gambling and illegal goods trade. Key participants in the meeting included senior police officials and representatives from LINE Thailand, such as Director of Government Relations Ms. Boonyarat Kittivorawut and Senior Manager of Public Policy Mr. Chawanwit Liangsuntornsith.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong emphasized that LINE Thailand has been a reliable partner in blocking illegal activities, including gambling, fraud, investment scams, and obscenity. However, the Royal Thai Police have urged LINE Thailand to intensify efforts to prevent criminal groups from using the app for other illicit activities, like arms and narcotics trafficking.

LINE Thailand expressed its commitment to collaborating fully with the police, receiving substantial support from LY Corporation, Japan. The company is currently enhancing its data blocking request system to be more effective and efficient. This upgraded system is projected to launch by mid-2026, aiming to bolster technological security for the public.
