Senate Approves Jirutt as New Election Commissioner

Bangkok: The Senate has approved Jirutt Visalvichit as the new Election Commissioner, marking a significant decision during an extraordinary session. The session, chaired by Deputy Senate President Boonsong Noisophol, focused on the urgent matter of appointing new members to the Election Commission.

According to Thai News Agency, the Senate considered the nominations of two candidates: Mr. Jirutt Visalvichit, who previously served as the Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, and Mr. Monthol Sudprasert, the former Director-General of the Department of Public Works and Town Planning. The session included a closed-door meeting to assess the candidates' backgrounds, conduct, and ethical standards.

The results of the session's vote showed strong support for Mr. Jirutt, who received 144 votes in favor, 1 against, and 26 abstentions. In contrast, Mr. Monthol did not secure enough votes for approval, garnering only 9 votes in favor, with 102 against and 57 abstentions.
