Smooth SAO Elections in Thailand Amid Minor Incident in Nakhon Si Thammarat

Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) released a summary of the overall results of the Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO) elections nationwide. The ECT announced that the SAO elections proceeded smoothly, with high voter turnout across 4,985 locations nationwide. The elections included the selection of 4,500 SAO mayors and 52,544 SAO members.

According to Thai News Agency, Acting Sub-Lieutenant Phasakon Siriphakayaporn, Deputy Secretary-General of the Election Commission, reported enthusiastic voter participation. Polling stations closed at 5:00 PM, and vote counting was expected to conclude by 8:00 PM. The election results will be officially announced within 30 days, or within 60 days if complaints arise. Despite some unrest in the three southern border provinces, polling stations operated without interruption.

A minor disturbance was reported in Nakhon Si Thammarat, where a ballot was torn at a polling station in Moo 6, Nong Hong Subdistrict, Thung Song District. The incident was caused by a misunderstanding between voters and officials, leading to the arrest of Santi, a candidate for the Subdistrict Administrative Organization, by Nong Hong Police Station. Legal action is anticipated.

To minimize confusion due to the large number of candidates, the Election Commission plans to install informational signs at polling stations for public verification.
