Saraburi: A severe summer storm wreaked havoc at the Songkran festival in Saraburi, resulting in the collapse of a giant archway that killed one person and injured 11 others. The chaos unfolded at Pongsiri Market in Khok Sawang Subdistrict, Mueang Saraburi District, during the festival's "Wan Lai" event, where a popular band was performing.
According to Thai News Agency, the storm's strong winds caused the large entrance arch structure to collapse, crushing shops and concertgoers. Rescuers and attendees quickly mobilized to lift the fallen structure and evacuate those trapped underneath. Of the 11 people injured, one suffered serious injuries, and a young man tragically lost his life in the incident.
Nine individuals were directly crushed by the collapsing archway, suffering from broken bones, head injuries, and bruises. Additionally, some victims sustained burns from oil and were electrocuted during the chaotic scene.
In response to the incident, Mr. Chinna-arch Rasiakkarasak, the District Chief of Saraburi City, has called upon the event organizers to provide an explanation and has instructed them to bolster security measures. He emphasized that the organizers will be held fully accountable should a similar incident occur in the future.
